Holocaust-denier Williamson fired

Holocaust-denying Bishop Richard Williamson has been dismissed as director of its seminary in La Reja, near Buenos Aires, by the ultraconservative Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), and his controversial views repudiated by them.

After announcing the dismissal yesterday, Father Christian Bouchacourt, the head of the Latin American chapter of SSPX, said, “Monsignor Williamson’s statements do not in any way reflect the position of our congregation.”

Ordered by the Vatican to recant his Holocaust denial, Williamson last week told Germany’s Spiegel magazine he must first review historical evidence before considering an apology. That provoked a firestorm of criticism which included a call by German bishops to re-excommunicate Williamson, but not the other three other SSPX bishops from whom the pope lifted excommunication last month.

Williamson’s dismissal was apparently orchestrated as part of Vatican efforts to quiet controversy over lifting of the four excommunications, and to restore sundered relationships.

Finding Noah’s ark (again) for a mere $…

Arks are on the minds many who seek to ride out the current economic storm. Archaeologist Randall Price, who is director of Liberty University’s new Center for Judaic Studies, seeks $60,000 to hike up Mount Ararat and (once again) disinter the Ark attributed to Noah.

Tony Cartledge explains:

Price says he is following up on a lead from a shepherd who claims he remembers playing on the ark as a boy. Supposedly, he led Price to the spot — at 15,000 feet — last September, where they expected to find the ark buried in a glacier, but discovered nothing more than a 60-foot-deep pile of boulders. The article says that “Price believes the landslide may have resulted from attacks against Kurdish rebels on the mountain, or perhaps from explosives that were set off to cover up the ark.”

“That seems almost like a fairy story,” Price told AP.

Choke, cough. Complete with your hint at a plot to re-hide the Ark.

Yes, and a fairy story for which a related book and DVD are sold by Price’s World of the Bible Ministries publishing enterprise. A story which just naturally helps illuminate his plans for a Liberty University Biblical Museum. The man is a veritable end of days industrial machine.

Cartledge offers a more blistering perspective on how much of a fairy story this is.

Re-excommunicate Williamson, German bishops demand

Williamson satirized in the German tabloid press.

Williamson satirized in the German tabloid press.

Holocaust-denying Bishop Richard Williamson balked at immediately meeting the pope’s requirement that he recant.

“Since I see that there are many honest and intelligent people who think differently, I must look again at the historical evidence,” the British bishop was quoted as saying.

Germany’s Catholic bishops responded by calling for his re-excommunication.

“Mr. Williamson is impossible and irresponsible,” said Archbishop Robert Zollitsch, chairman of the German Bishops’ Conference in an article published Saturday. “I now see no room for him in the Catholic Church.”

The German tabloid press was even less oblique in its statements and characterized Williamson as dishonest in a variety of ways.

Williamson is “holed up in the seminary he runs in Argentina,” and isn’t talking to reporters.
